100% green electricity:
Our server architecture is powered by 100% green electricity. The green electricity is sourced from KlimaINVEST Green Concepts in cooperation with LSW.
The green electricity from KlimaINVEST/LSW consists of 0% nuclear power, 0% coal and 0% natural gas - CO² waste 0g/kWh (100% hydroelectric power).
Sustainable choice of location:
Our offices are deliberately rented in the heart of the city centre rather than in the less expensive periphery, as we want to enable our employees to get to work on foot, by bike or by public transport.
Intelligent heating control and not using air conditioning in the summer months is a matter of course for us. Even our fully automatic coffee machine switches itself off after a short time when not in use.
We obtain the electricity for our offices from Green Planet Energy, thus supporting the renewable and fair generation of electricity. Tested and certified, 100% out of conviction.
Use of energy-efficient hardware:
Only energy-efficient hardware that minimises power consumption is used in our office and within the server architecture.
When compiling our servers, in addition to the basic labelling as "Efficient-Line" servers, which are characterised by low energy consumption, we also pay attention to particularly energy-saving individual components, such as the CPUs and the power supply units. Many of our power supply units are also certified by the "80plus" programme. In this programme, parts are tested for efficiency independently of the manufacturers.
In addition to power-saving CPUs or power supplies, power-saving SSDs and 2.5" SAS HDDs can now be used. While 3.5" SAS HDDs draw approx. 10-16W, the consumption of 2.5" HDDs is only 3-4W. The SSDs are unbeatable power savers with approx. 0.6 - 2.5W.
Conserving resources through a server infrastructure that meets demand :
Our system is flexibly adapted to the requirements and was set up according to demand. An oversized communication platform would consume unnecessary resources, which we handle sensibly with our approach. Through the partial use of server virtualisation, we are very flexible and do not have to provide unnecessary overcapacity that would have to be supplied with electricity and air conditioning.
We relieve the load on our IT infrastructure by rejecting spam e-mails, which account for a large part of the e-mail volume, in advance. Our e-mail servers are therefore significantly relieved, as spam e-mails (often more than 95 per cent of the total e-mail volume) no longer reach our servers at all.
Efficient software development:
Our software development process is characterised by a special focus on the efficiency of load-relevant processes and the associated prudent use of resources.
In addition, we were able to optimise our work processes through the targeted switch to software solutions to the extent that we were able to reduce the use of paper (recycled paper) by 80%.
Support of environmental projects:
If a mail.de account is terminated, the customer is free to leave unused credit for SMS/fax to mail.de GmbH, which is then deposited in an account of Umweltbank and thus serves to support environmental projects.
What can our customers do to be as environmentally friendly as possible when using a mail.de mailbox?
- Avoid printing out your e-mails as far as possible
- Use recycled paper for printing
- Use our provided function of automatic logout in case of inactivity. In this way, unnecessarily occupied resources are released and not used or used again as needed.
- Do not configure an e-mail collection service with a low interval (pull) in your mail.de mailbox and instead use the configuration of an e-mail forwarding at the external provider (push). Setting up e-mail forwarding is more sustainable in that resources only have to be used when a message actually reaches the mail.de systems, and you do not have to check "on the off chance" whether a new message has arrived.
